For a couple reasons (wanting to get things besides scrolling on tumblr done, the new WS trailer) I am going to be off of tumblr for most of today. Would someone on my flist mind linking me to the new Winter Soldier trailer gets uploaded to youtube/other streaming site? Because I'd really like to experience that first in trailer instead of gif-set form.

Thanks!

I've been avoiding reviews and commentary about Frozen because I wanted to experience it as unbiased as I could, but last night I saw it and:

This is definitely going on my top five movies of 2014 (regardless of release date, I organize movies by when I see them). (Or maybe not, depending on how/if my opinion changes based on commentary.)

[+] So... has LJ been withholding comments for anyone else? Just me then.

[+] I am so sad that I have to go to work tomorrow. Luckily just for two days and then I have the 1st off.

[+] I have about a billion tabs of fanfic open.

[+] Since everything is one hiatus, here is my to-watch list of media:

  • Finish the last couple of episodes of season one of Arrow

  • finish watching Nikita (I'm about half-way through the series

  • re-watch season one/watch the rest of Being Human (UK)

  • Plus

[+] I'd like to see Frozen and The Book Thief

[+] I need to go through my folders of random media and figure out what I actually want to watch.

Reasons I Don't Want To Watch The Hobbit movies, a list:

  • I have no need to watch that dude from Sherlock or hear the voice of that other dude from Sherlock, ever.

  • the director is asking me to, theoretically, spend $40.00 and nine hours of my life to watch the movie adaptation of a children's book that I could read, unabridged, in about eighty minutes.

  • They fugled up Lee Pace.

  • They fugled up Richard Armitage

  • They did not do a great job with Lily Evangaline's wig - I don't think that weird auburn color does her any favors.

I'm attempting to clean up my desktop and I came across several half-written ficlets that I'm hoping to finish up and post this weekend. (Especially because one of them is Sif/Loki and I'm 90% sure that Thor 2 is going to ruin that pairing for me.)

The only finished one is this Bruce/Selina (probably because it's six sentences).

Okay, I actually really like Wonder Woman's costume redesign for this movie. Yes, she's not wearing any pants, but her costume still looks really functional, it's clearly referencing her original outfit without being like OH MY GOD, PATRIOTISM, she has the nice bare shoulders/bracers combination which always looks fierce as fuck, and there is NO CLEAVAGE. Thumbs up in my book.

[livejournal.com profile] errant_shadows asked me:

How about a list of your current fandoms?

New shows you intend to watch, old shows you're still watching, books, comics, movies, etc.?

It may prompt some interesting discussions from people who weren't aware of your shared interest.

This was a really great question, because I was thinking of doing a fannish check-in anyway. Basically, here’s the lay of the fannish land:

Arrow: still haven’t finished season one. This show is hovering right at that ‘I like this but I don’t love it’ place, frustratingly.

The Avengers: still interested in all my go-to pairings, sad that this fandom is in a lull at the moment (just waiting, I am sure, for new canon in the form of Thor 2 and CA: WINTER SOLDIER NATASHA ROMANOFF RETURN TO ME!)

Elementary: still haven’t watched any of season two. Probably because the back of my mind is going, ‘they’re never going to top Irene Adler is Moriarty, leave now.’

SHIELD: blah. I do not like Skye, I don't find the scientists amusing, etc, etc. I'm dropping this one.

Sleepy Hollow. Dropping this too. I want to love it, but each episode feels like forty minutes of chasing a macguffin, plus I'm shipping it wrong. I am WAY more interested in Ichabod's past slap-slap-kiss romance with Katrina or with him hooking up with Abby's sister than with Abby herself.

Parks & Rec: SUNSHINE AND RAINBOWS!

I don’t have anything to say bookwise. Nothing worth talking about since Rose Under Fire and World War Z. I did really enjoy an anothology called Apple For The Creature, and it reminded me that I need to track down more Marjorie Lui novels.

Movies:

If my tv schedule ends up being as slim as it looks like it will be, I may have time to work on the massive backlog of movies I’d like to see. As for upcoming attractions, I am SO DOWN for Catching Fire, the Thor 2 stinger (seriously, I’m more excited for that than I am for Thor, for serious), and The Book Thief.

Comics:

Wherefore art thou, Hawkeye?

I am technically caught up with Captain Marvel, only I understand nothing. [livejournal.com profile] qualapec was the 'everyone dies alone but only the selfish live that way' the conversation the one you were talking about earlier in the context of the Carol + Jess relationship?

I also have some Black Widow-centric comics to read.

On the DC side of things (look at your life, look at your choices) I have the spoils from the Stephanie Brown masterpost, Cassandra Cain’s batgirl run (because Steph), selected Jason Todd comics (thanks, latenightcuppa!), and the beginning of Damian Wayne’s run.

I watched Dredd friday night, which is a total, total B movie, but a fun one, even if it's a crying shame that we don't get to see Karl Urban's beautiful eyes. Lena Headly was a fantastic villain, the girl-rookie character had a nice arc where she took a level in badass. Warning: there is some sexual violence/threat of sexual violence, which I actually thought was very satisfying turned back against one of the villains.

Ellen Page to star in Queen & Country movie.

I am super excited about this. I have yet to read Queen & Country (although it's been on my to-read list for years) because the library either doesn't have this and/or doesn't list these comics in a way that allows me to figure out the reading order.

That said, lady spies! Ruthless lady spies! Greg Rucka! Ellen Page! These are all things that I like!

I recently watched the Batman: The Animated Series introductory episodes for Catwoman and some Catwoman comics (Anodyne 1-3) AND THEN the Catwoman scenes of The Dark Rises and it was a one-two-three punch of childhood nostalgia and fierce lady feelings and CATWOMAN, HOW AWESOME IS SHE?

Okay, the Catwoman issue I read was, QUITE LITERALLY, an entire issue about a morally ambiguous lady thinking about how to be a hero and be herself and realizing/owning the fact that the world is a murky place where good people do bad things. BE STILL MY HEART.

Also, I believe it was [livejournal.com profile] mistaria who was talking about how much more palatable Batman is when he’s interacting with Catwoman, and it’s so damn true. That moment when Batman tells Selina she’s a good person at heart is a great Actual Hero Moment.

On that subject, the Animated Series:

I remember the first episode of this two parter really, really well from when I saw it as a child (a.k.a, all the stuff with Catwoman cutting glass with her claws and running across rooftops and flirting with Batman and showing up at charity galas looking fierce as fuck) but the ending of the two parter took me completely by surprise (although it retrospect, it shouldn’t have). Batman, how can you be Dating Catwoman when you’ve arrested her?

Catwoman: There’s something between us.
Batman: Yes. The law.
redbrunja: ..and your erection.

And Bruce saving the cat! Again, I’m having ‘you’re an actual hero!’ feelings. Like, I did not get ‘Batman would totally save me if I was in trouble!’ feelings pretty much ever in any of the Nolan movies or in any of the comics I’ve read recently, so it’s really different to watch the animated series and be like, ‘oh, okay, I would feel safer if this guy was looming over my crime-ridden city. (And I don’t think that’s a function of the different ages the animated series versus the movies are aimed at, I think it’s due to a difference in core aesthetic.)

(I should make a list: If I was in trouble in Gotham, who of the nominal white hats would I want to save me? Bruce would be last on that list. Probably it would go Catwoman, Stephanie, Jason. Jason’s ranking depends on whether or not I’d get to make out with him afterward.)

I said this after I first watched The Dark Knight Rises but I’ll say it again: goddamn, is Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman perfect.Read more... )

Apparently, there was a petition to the White House attempting to stop Ben Affleck from being Batman. Wow, way to try and make the fact that Ben Afflect has several critically acclaimed and commercially successful films under his belt sound like a flaw. Also, if you think Ben Affleck was the thing that “ruined” Daredevil. Fuck you. Just fuck you. The script and the tone of that movie where both FAR larger problems than their lead actor.

I want to tell everyone who signed that to get out of their parent’s basement and start caring about something that actually matters.

 photo tbhoney_pam_zpsa6ea549d.gif

And I don’t say that lightly. But seriously, look at your life, look at your choices. Pull your head out of your ass.

The White House basically just removed the petition, which was probably the classiest thing to do, although I was really hoping that some snarky as fuck staff writer would make a formal response.

In spite, I have decided I am really happy and excited that Ben Afflect is going to be playing Batman.

I really wish that people, without making a HUGE THING about it, would just use ‘well-written’ or ‘badly-written’ female characters instead of strong or weak, because some of the most interesting female characters I could mention have huge weaknesses of character, which makes them interesting, drives the story, and works against this idea that female characters have to be above reproach at all times.

I'm thinking specifically of Briony in Atonement, who drives the plot, creates the narrative, is spoiled and jealous and longs to be stronger than she is and fails and attempts to rewrite her own and her sister's history.

Because calling Briony "strong' feels ridiculous, but goddamn is she a believable, relatable, narratively-vital and fascinatingly flawed character. Period. Full stop.

Ben Afflect is Batman.

I... am not sure how to react? On the one hand, Ben Afflect. On the other, he was really good in The Town and has a nice chin. I'm not sure if he has the jawline for the role, though.

(Just added a batman tag. I don't know how I feel about that either.)

Natalie Dormer has been cast as Cressida in The Hunger Games. I have no real memory of Cressida, but I whole-heartedly approve of casting Natalie Dormer in ANYTHING that I love, so.

I watched Inglorious Basterds and had the usual experience of watching a Tarantino movie - there was an incredible amount of talent and ability to build suspense (on my god, the scene in the bar basement) but also some elements I could really do without. (The scalping/Indian appropriation; why? why?) But then Tarantino would have these wonderfully arch, extending camera shots that make me want to grab film-makings and go, 'look, look, how interesting this is! do more things like that!' Also, I really appreciate that Tarantino peoples his films (or at least, the ones I've seen) with multiple fierce ladies.

Also, side note, there was a crack fic that made a reference to Steve Rogers watching Inglorious Basterds and–

 photo stocktumblr_m3hmfynP6d1ro509gcopy.gif

Within the first forty minutes there were about five things that would have offended Steve Rogers to the last fiber of his being. Even for a crack fic, there is no excuse.

I have been going back and forth on whether or not I'm going to watch City Of Bones in the theaters and whether or not I'm going to read the books but I think this clip decided me in favor (of at least investing $11.50 and two hours.)

Also, it made me miss The Sarah Connor Chronicles TREMENDOUSLY. Also, Lena Hadley just gets more and more gorgeous as time goes by.
