most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs

This is a great meme that I gacked from philcoulson over on tumblr and you should all do it, too. As was pointed out when it was making the round on tumblr, one thing that's notable about this meme is that it's all general questions - nothing about OTPs or romantic relationships. (Of course, because it's me, there's a touch of pairing talk anyway, because that's how I roll.)

(Psst, [livejournal.com profile] qualapec, this was the meme I was talking about.)

questions ahoy! )

she killed it with kisses and from it she fled

[livejournal.com profile] ever_neutral asked me to talk about Katniss/Peeta on December 22nd (I'm five minutes late, sue me). So, to properly prepare for this question, I reread The Hunger Games over the weekend, trying to pin down the exact moment I started shipping them. I also reread my first post about THG, where I said that after reading the first book I would have been okay with her ending up with either Peeta or Gale, which... I think was not untrue, but I distinctly remember a point about 2/3 of the way through the first book when I wanted her to end up with Peeta more.

What I love about the romance in the first book, it that... it's just delightful. In the sense that it is complicated and twisty and makes things harder. The book hits this point at the 2/3 mark - possibly earlier - where I am 100% convinced that Peeta is ridiculously in love with Katniss and Katniss is both deeply suspicious of Peeta and uncertain of her own feelings (enough though I am reading this book going 'FEELINGS! THOSE ARE FEELINGS YOU'RE FEELING, KATNISS!').

So, yeah, it's just fabulous.

OH THE SUBJECT OF REREADING, knowing what happens, here is my theory on some of the things we don't see:

I'd Eat Her Heart In The Marketplace.

[livejournal.com profile] plural_entity asked me a couple of questions for December 19th:

1. What was the very first ship you ever shipped (even if you didn't know what shipping was at the time)?

First, a little context. I have always loved romance but back when I was 8-10 (which is when I first started consuming media in, basically, a very similar way to how I consume media now) I was a lot more willing to follow the author to whatever relationship they wanted. For example, with Tamora Pierce, I was happy to just follow the narrative and see who the heroines ended up with.

And then there was The Darkangel Trilogy. (I'd like to pause for a moment and mention that I liked vampires both before they were cool AND back when they were beautifully monstrous, monstrously beautiful creatures.) So, three books happened, including things like the heroine giving the hero her heart, if I remember correctly? And it became clear to me that the hero was falling deeper and deeper into love with the heroine after treating her badly in the beginning, but she didn't see it, even though she was in love with him, and then in the final bookthey don't get together. They FUCKING FINALLY consummate their marriage (I think? again, it's been over a decade) and he's like, 'let's be married for reals!' And she says no, because of duty or magic or some bullshit like that.
And okay, the heroine does go off to spend eternity (I think) with her female bff which in retrospect... I feel like I should be more okay with? But at the time, I was just furious that after three books of tragedy and longing and beautiful prose, spoiler )

I really need to do a reread, see how my memories of my feelings match up with what I see as an adult.

2. You're stuck on an island LOST style with 3 fandom characters. Which ones would you choose?

Katniss Everdeen, Slade Wilson (arrow version), and Tony Stark.

I WOULD FUCKING LIVE TO GET OFF THAT ISLAND, AND IN A REASONABLE TIME FRAME TO BOOT.

3. What character death (of any fandom) affected you the most?

I can't think of a good example? I mean, there have been fridgings I've been super pissed about (Abigail, Shado), deaths I thought were really badly done (Sirius Black), and things that made me sad but I really understood and were okay with them happening (Derek Reese), so I'm having trouble thinking of a really good example to go here.

BONUS QUESTION FROM [livejournal.com profile] qualapec:

You Rule 63 the entire cast of one Shakespeare play you have read/seen. Which one would it be?

Much Ado About Nothing. I think it would gender-swap really well, Hero's plot, while still undeniable fucked up, would at least be DIFFERENT if it was a male character's purity being questioned, and I would LOVE to see a male!Beatrice requesting that female!Benedict kill Claudio.

"Will You Stay With Me?" "Always"

I finally, finally, FINALLY had the chance to see Catching Fire. No surprise, I loved it. Afterwards I spent about twenty minutes talking with my mom about how otp Katniss and Peeta are. Sadly, I wasn't impressed with Jena Malone as Johanna. I wanted to love her so much, but I really didn't.

I've taken the hunger games and catching fire off tumblr savior, so if you have a tumblr or LJ tag, let me know.

Subject Line When I Have Decided What My Feelings Are Doing

Ben Afflect is Batman.

I... am not sure how to react? On the one hand, Ben Afflect. On the other, he was really good in The Town and has a nice chin. I'm not sure if he has the jawline for the role, though.

(Just added a batman tag. I don't know how I feel about that either.)

Natalie Dormer has been cast as Cressida in The Hunger Games. I have no real memory of Cressida, but I whole-heartedly approve of casting Natalie Dormer in ANYTHING that I love, so.

The Odds Are Never In Our Favor

In case you haven’t seen it, the Catching Fire trailer:

This is making me really excited. I love the cool tones that everything is filmed in and how it looks so blue. Also, I’d like to point out that nothing past the halfway point of the film is shown. Kudos, trailer editor, for holding things back.

"Killing People Is Easy. Making Them Suffer Is An Art."

[livejournal.com profile] mollivanders asked me about the presentation of a strong woman in fiction; E.g. Black Widow, Kahlan Amnell, Buffy, Katniss, Johanna, etc etc etc.

Let me just say, the women mentioned are some of my favorites. I am a sucker for just about every flavor of action girl but what makes the listed women awesome is that while all of them are fierce warriors in their own right (Kahlan and Buffy in particular are both as stylish as they are deadly) they all have different and interesting facets to their personality. Kahlan and Buffy both long for a more normal life, Natasha Romanoff is either (movie) atoning for a bloody past or (comics) a fierce, vengeful SHIELD agent who protects women who have been victimized by others. Katniss just wants everyone to leave her alone and asking her to have feelings about things that aren't a.) hunting or b.) her little sister and Johanna wants to BURN SOME SHIT DOWN.

Finished my taxes. It is actually embarrassing how long it's taken me to freaking sit down and do them, considering how easy they were and the fact that for the first time ever, I'm actually getting money back. (Seriously, I was at the 'let me reorganize my bathroom drawers to avoid doing taxes stage of procrastination).

I feel like I blinked and today vanished - part of that was because I was up super-late watching The Hunger Games (again, a friend had free IMAX tickets)* and part of that was because I basically woke up, did errands, and then spent TWO FUCKING HOURS with a Century Link technician and my landlady in what was the most awkward, stressful internet repair job of my entire life (short version: my landlady hated the tech, the tech wanted to tell me his entire life story).

I'm now painting my nails to de-stress. (OPI What A Broad on my toes, Edin-Burgundy on my nails - this color isn't really a burgundy, but the best blood-red color I've found).

[livejournal.com profile] 12_12_12 had a great (and also depressing) meta post about the kind of love stories television shows are choosing to tell these days, which prompted me to ask: flist, can you give me examples of currently airing shows where characters in a romance choose the larger picture or their personal ideals over their loved on, without this being textually seen as Not Loving There S.O. Enough?

*So, on the drive home from my second viewing of THG,

So, via Extra Hot Great, apparently Kristin Bell is campaigning to play Johanna in Catching Fire.

Kristin Bell looking nothing like I pictured Johanna but that casting would be so freaking awesome I literally feel like I have to lie down.

Not To Hash Anyone's Squee....

I realize hypothesising what Hogwarts House a Hunger Games character would be in is just a fun fandom exercise but I feel like the debate about which House Katniss belongs to just goes to show what an awesome and complex character Katniss Everdeen is the inherent artificiality of that kind of personality-based division of individuals. Like, I think it tends to lead to a shallowness of characters because it leads readers and writers to think of people as tropes instead of individuals. Rowling didn't manage to pull it off and in situations like Divergent it just comes across and ridiculously arbitrary and nonsensical.

In other news, over at [livejournal.com profile] het_reccers the current challenge is 'first times.' Which I find... a promising challenge.

I Hope Our Few Remaining Friends Give Up Their Plans To Save Us

Ugh. I'm in one of those moods, you know? Where nothing sounds entertaining and I am disgruntled and I really should just go to bed but I'm not quite tired enough.

SO.

HERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT ARE THINGS.

There was a little bit of Regina/Emma hate on tumblr which is fucking ridiculous because 1.) Emma/Regina is an awesome pairing and 2.) There is practically more Archie/Ruby fic than there is Emma/Regina and 3.) It has the best ship name ever (Swan Queen fyi).

So, at the Game of Thrones friending meme, they were asking which House we think we'd belong to.. and I had no idea (because I haven't read the books, and thus am not familiar enough with them). So, which house of Westeros do YOU think I'd belong to, and why?

I am going to spam the hell out of this meme with Haymitch/Johanna and Haymitch/Katniss. May the odds be ever in my favor!

I have yet to actually like a Civil War song. IKR? I feel like there will be people demanding my fandom card now.

So... what do you want to talk about, flist?
